This simple little steam enginewas the very first to runon rails, in
1804, securing the seven-ton-engine’shistoric
first rail journey its prime position in steam
enthusiasts’ hearts.
The
first B17 to be rebuilt at Darlington(in Aug 1945) to class B2
was No 2871 “
ManchesterCity” which was renamed “Royal
Sovereign” and painted green in April 1946. It then became the
Cambridge Royal engine for many years working the Royal Train between
Kings Cross and Kings Lynn. Here it has dropped into the “Back End” of
the Jubilee Shed at Stratfordin Oct 1945.
