Help Unlock the
History of Kingsley Hall! |
|
To add to its 80th anniversary celebrations,
Kingsley Hall in Bromley by Bow has been awarded a grant of £49,900 from the
Heritage Lottery Fund for a year-long project, Kingsley Hall and the Legacy
of Muriel Lester. This will preserve the Muriel Lester Archive, make it
accessible to everybody, and so gain wider recognition for the achievements of
the two Kingsley Halls’ founders, Muriel and her sister Doris. |
|
Muriel Lester’s personal papers are kept at Kingsley Hall in
Dagenham. The archive includes correspondence, diaries, notebooks, publications
and photographs, and the papers of Doris Lester. It is a fascinating and
historically important record of the Lester sisters’ work in Bow and Dagenham,
and also of Muriel’s world travels in the cause of international peace. The
Muriel Lester archives will be made accessible through an on-line catalogue,
digital images and a new interactive website. Working with local schools,
the Tower Hamlets Humanities Education Centre will produce a learning pack, and
Stitches In Time will create a tapestry banner on the theme Symbols of Peace.

Volunteers will be at the heart of this project. Please get
in contact if you would like to be involved. There will be a meeting and
social event to introduce the project to all volunteers at Kingsley Hall in
Dagenham, Friday 26th September, 1pm–3pm.
As a volunteer you will find out more about Kingsley Hall’s history and learn
new skills—or perhaps you have skills or memories of your own to share. You can:
-
Take part in conservation workshops at Kingsley Hall in
Dagenham. Working on the Muriel Lester archives, with training and
supervision by a conservator. Started (see below).
-
Join Kingsley Hall Oral History Group and record memories of
the Lester sisters and Kingsley Hall.
-
Learn multimedia editing to help prepare footage, stills,
audio and copy for the archives, display materials and publicity.
Anyone with an interest in heritage is welcome, from beginners to those with
graphic design skills. Taking place in the autumn/winter.
